Sudhakar Dalela and Sibi George Appointed as Secretaries in Ministry of External Affairs

In a significant reshuffle within the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of two senior Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officers to key secretarial roles. The changes, formalized by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on July 29, 2025, will take effect following the retirement of the current officeholders on August 31, 2025.

Sudhakar Dalela Named Secretary (Economic Relations)

Mr. Sudhakar Dalela, a 1993-batch IFS officer, has been appointed as the next Secretary (Economic Relations) in the MEA. He will succeed Mr. Dammu Ravi (IFS: 1989), who is set to retire at the end of August. Mr. Dalela brings extensive experience in bilateral and multilateral diplomacy and is currently serving in a senior role within the ministry. In his new position, he will lead India’s economic diplomacy efforts, including engagement with multilateral economic forums and external trade negotiations.

Sibi George Appointed Secretary (West)

Mr. Sibi George, also from the 1993 IFS batch, will assume the role of Secretary (West) after the retirement of Mr. Tanmaya Lal (IFS: 1991). Mr. George has held several ambassadorial posts and is well-versed in India’s relations with nations across Europe, the Americas, and Africa. His appointment underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening ties with the western hemisphere.

These appointments reflect the MEA’s continued strategy to place seasoned diplomats in strategic roles to advance India’s global economic and geopolitical interests.
