In a key administrative decision, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has granted a one-year extension to Saurabh Garg as Secretary of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). His tenure will now continue until July 31, 2026, or until further orders, whichever comes earlier.
The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) issued the official order on Tuesday, confirming that Garg will remain in office on a contractual basis, under the same terms and conditions as his current appointment.
Second Consecutive Extension Post-Superannuation
Garg was first appointed as MoSPI Secretary on May 30, 2024, shortly before his retirement on July 31, 2024. In recognition of his policy leadership and expertise, the government had granted a one-year post-retirement extension, which was set to expire in July 2025. This new decision marks his second consecutive extension, underscoring continued trust in his capabilities during a critical phase for India’s data infrastructure.
Continuing as Secretary to National Statistical Commission
In addition to his primary role, Saurabh Garg will also continue to serve as Secretary to the National Statistical Commission, reinforcing his influence in guiding national data and analytics policy.
An Accomplished Career in Governance and Tech Reform
A 1991-batch IAS officer from the Odisha cadre, Garg has held senior roles in both the central and state governments, spanning areas like finance, public policy, and digital governance.
He is particularly well known for his tenure as CEO of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), where he played a crucial role in shaping Aadhaar and India’s broader digital identity ecosystem.
His work has consistently reflected a progressive vision—modernizing public data systems, promoting evidence-based policymaking, and integrating technologies like AI and real-time analytics into official statistics.
Driving India’s Data Strategy Under Viksit Bharat 2047
Under Garg’s leadership, MoSPI has undertaken major initiatives such as:
- Overhauling the National Sample Survey
- Enhancing real-time data collection infrastructure
- Advancing the use of AI and digital tools in statistical modeling
His reappointment is widely seen as an effort to ensure stability and strategic continuity in India’s statistical systems, particularly as the country pushes forward with the Viksit Bharat 2047 agenda focused on data-led development and performance tracking.
