Education and Early Career
Shri S. Krishnan holds a postgraduate degree in Economics and has a professional background in both administration and financial management. Over the course of his career in the Indian Administrative Service, he has held a range of significant posts in the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Government of India. His roles have included Principal Secretary in the Housing and Urban Development Department, Finance Department, and Planning and Development Department.
He has also served as Private Secretary to the Union Finance Minister during 2004–2007, and represented India in international assignments, including with the International Monetary Fund.
Role as Secretary, MeitY
As the Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Shri Krishnan is at the forefront of India’s digital and technological transformation. Since taking charge, he has prioritized the following areas:
- Semiconductor Development: Advocated for expanded investment and support in the semiconductor ecosystem, including fabrication, component manufacturing, and design infrastructure.
- Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity: Promoted the integration of AI in governance and industry, while emphasizing the importance of a secure digital environment.
- Electronics Manufacturing: Encouraged deeper value addition in electronics manufacturing beyond assembly, aiming to make India a global hub for electronics design and innovation.
- Skilling and Capacity Building: Focused on strengthening the workforce for the digital economy through initiatives under NIELIT and other skilling platforms.
- Promoting Innovation Ecosystems: Advocated for greater collaboration among government, academia, and industry to boost research, development, and commercialization in digital technologies.
- Regional Growth in Tech Sector: Supported the expansion of Global Capability Centres (GCCs) and tech hubs into Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities to encourage inclusive development and talent decentralization.
