Kerala Suspended IAS Officer Prashant Faces New Inquiry Ordered by Vijayan Government

Suspended IAS officer N. Prashant, a 2007-batch bureaucrat, is facing deeper scrutiny as the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Kerala government has initiated a fresh inquiry into his conduct. The investigation, to be led by Additional Chief Secretary Rajan N. Khobragade, is expected to conclude within three months.

Fresh Probe Triggered by Unsatisfactory Response

The decision to launch a new inquiry follows the government’s dissatisfaction with Prashant’s response to his earlier suspension notice. He was initially suspended over allegations including mishandling documents related to the Unnati project, discrepancies in attendance records, and violating service conduct rules through social media activity during his tenure as CEO.

Delayed Process and Multiple Suspension Extensions

Although inquiries in such cases are generally concluded within six months, the proceedings against Prashant have already stretched over nine months. His suspension has been extended three times, drawing criticism over the prolonged delay.

Allegations Against Top Bureaucrats Raise Eyebrows

Prashant has publicly accused several senior bureaucrats—namely Additional Chief Secretary A. Jayathilak, IAS officer K. Gopalakrishnan (2013 batch), and former Chief Secretary Sharada Muralidharan—of misconduct. These allegations have further complicated the inquiry, particularly as it is being overseen by Jayathilak and his subordinate Khobragade, both of whom are named in Prashant’s claims, raising questions about the probe’s impartiality.

Public Support and Online Activism

Despite the controversy, Prashant has garnered significant public backing, especially for his tenure as Kozhikode district collector, where he earned praise for his administrative work. He maintains a strong presence on social media, where he continues to speak out against the suspension and criticize senior officials.

Prashant contends that the charges against him are based on unreliable digital data and lack legal standing. He has also made public details of a private hearing with former Chief Secretary Muralidharan, further straining relations with top officials.
