Three Bihar Cadre IPS Officers Promoted to DG Rank; State Election Commissioner Tenure Extended

In a significant boost to the Bihar cadre of the Indian Police Service (IPS), the Central Government has approved the promotion of three senior officers to the rank of Director General (DG). The officers promoted include:

  • Jitendra Kumar (1993 batch)
  • Amit Kumar (1994 batch)
  • Anupama Nilekar Chandra (1994 batch)

The decision was cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, and official notifications were issued accordingly. While Amit Kumar and Anupama Nilekar Chandra are currently on central deputation, Jitendra Kumar’s elevation will take effect August 1, 2025, under a Bihar Government order.

These promotions not only recognize individual merit but also enhance Bihar’s presence in top-level national policing and administrative leadership.

Significance of Promotions

The elevation of these officers to DG rank allows them to take on more strategic leadership roles in national and state-level law enforcement, contributing to better governance and public safety frameworks.

This development highlights the Central Government’s confidence in the professional capabilities of Bihar cadre IPS officers and reflects the increasing importance of regional representation at the top echelons of Indian policing.

Bihar Government Amends Election Commissioner Tenure Rules

In a parallel administrative reform, the Bihar government has amended Rule-5 of the Bihar State Election Commissioner (Appointment and Service Conditions) Rules, 2008, to allow for extended tenure.

Key Changes:

  • Previous Rule: 5-year term or until the age of 65, whichever was earlier
  • Amended Rule: Tenure now extendable by up to three additional years, allowing service up to eight years or until the age of 68, whichever is earlier

The amendment, approved by the Council of Ministers, is aimed at ensuring continuity and stability in electoral administration. According to the Panchayati Raj Department, the change helps prevent leadership gaps during crucial electoral cycles and supports smoother democratic processes.

Looking Ahead

Together, these developments—senior IPS promotions and administrative reforms—underscore Bihar’s commitment to strengthening both its governance structures and electoral integrity. The state is poised to benefit from enhanced law enforcement leadership and a more consistent electoral oversight mechanism.
